Tampa Bay's longest running German
American Radio show, now in its 36th year, comes to listeners as the lunch
hour show Saturday and Sunday 1 to 2 p.m. on WTIS 1110 AM
The German Radio Show, "Deutsche Funksendung" has been delighting
German- speaking listeners for more than 35 years. Founded in 1965 and
brought to Tampa Bay over 20 years ago, the show is Tampa Bay's connection
to ALL THINGS GERMAN.
In December of 1998, Susanne Nielsen, one of five volunteer
speakers on the show was appointed new General Manager, and host of
program. In the first year of her tenure, she expanded the show from one
to two hours with extra evening shows during the summer months.
She also greatly expanded the show's listenership when she moved it
to WTIS 1110 AM Radio in January 1999. At 10, 000 watts WTIS has a
broadcast range from Brooksville to Venice, into parts of Orlando and even
to Melbourne on Florida's East coast.
The German Radio Show Team plays music for all tastes. We have a
repertoire of German music from traditional to contemporary. Listeners
enjoy the music and the different personalities of the speakers and the
three volunteers answering the telephones during the live broadcast.
Susanne Nielsen is heard Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 2 p.m. on WTIS 1110
AM Radio.
The German Radio Show, Deutsche Funksendung, is filled with German
music and information. The music styles range from "golden oldies,"
operetta to folk to contemporary pop songs. Information is another major
part of the show. Every program begins with German news from Deutsche
Welle Radio, Cologne, and during the show, current events in the area are
showcased. Interviews with Studio guests, many of them personalities from
arts and entertainment, liven up the German Radio Show. Listeners love
Susanne's Culture Mirror/Kulturspiegel every Saturday.
Every weekend the German Radio Show
gives tickets away on the air. Listeners are encouraged to call in
requests or ask questions about advertisers and events. Germans, Swiss,
and Austrians know about the German Radio Show from advertisements in
German language publications. Flyers in Motels, Hotels and all German
businesses in the area inform tourists and seasonal residents of the show
times and carry sponsors' logos. The German Radio Show is advertised in
many German language publications in the US, like Das Fenster and Nord
Amerikanische Wochenpost.
Listeners of The German Radio Show are quite diverse. Tampa Bays
beautiful beaches and recreation facilities draw Germans. Germans comprise
the second largest minority of Florida residents. A quarter million
residents in the Tampa Bay area have German heritage.
Area German clubs offer year-round weekly social events. They boast
a growing number of members from Austria, Switzerland and Germany. Now
more than ever, younger business people with children, are making Tampa
Bay their home.
More and more half-year residents own property along the beaches
and the Clearwater, Tarpon Springs, New Port Richey area. They are able to
stay up to 6 months without a visa, then must return home to Germany, only
to return to Florida after another six months. Business people listen to
The German Radio Show when they come to Tampa
Bay. With a six week summer holidays from school and plenty of vacation
time for the working parents, Germans are among the many Summer tourists
looking for information about events in the area, places to visit from
Tampa and where to find their German products while staying abroad. In the
winter months "snowbirds" come to Tampa Bay, many of them with German
roots and experiences. Students of German are informed and grow into avid
listeners, supporting their language skills. Americans with European
experience, family background or a love of the German language tune in
regularly.
The German Radio Show goes out to
listeners, at sponsor locations or clubs, and for special events. The
German Radio Show has been a sponsor of The Vienna Boys Choir performance
at the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center, new German films, and a variety
of other events. For information regarding the show, other organizations
